Sawdust Fired Pottery

This section of the webpage is dedicated to the process and display of my pots chosen to be burned in
a more traditional form of firing than the modern electric kiln.

--------------------------------

Sawdust, or pit, firing is a method of finishing a pot where it becomes infused with the elements surrounding it as it is burned. The blackoned color of the pots shown here comes from the carbon of the sawdust. Colorations appear when materials other than sawdust are mixed in or affixed to the pot itself. This process creates a truely unique piece since no two fires can ever be the same.

---------------------------------

Sawdust fired pots unfortunetly do not reach the required temperatures to make the clay non pourous. Becasue of this, these pots are not naturally water tight. Any piece that requires water for its function( i.e. vase) has been sealed with Tung oil therefore giving a more than decorative use. For questions about which pieces may be sealed feel free to contact me.

----------------------------------

These pots were not fired in materials that can be quarenteed to be non-toxic. This makes them unusable for food use.

Although they may not be food safe or fuctional in a traditional sense, every
one of these pots adds a unique quality to any space.
